Shrina: Shared Intelligence Group, American Branch

The team had barely had a chance to catch their breath and unwind when Richards stormed in, glanced around, and settled his gaze on Shrina.

“They want you,” he said.

“What?”

“Just come. You’ll see, or… hear.”

She frowned, glancing around at Roy and the others’ looks of confusion, but followed without another question.

“There we were, thinking we had to try and interrogate the bastard, when guess who walks in?” Richards paused for effect but didn’t really expect an answer. “Secretary of State Veles, that’s who. He tells us not to worry, that he has it under control. I’m wondering what the hell State has to do with any of this, but then he explained his past and his involvement in a new program that’s related to mind manipulation. And… it’s working.”

They exited the passage into a room that looked through mirrors into an interrogation room where the captured vampire sat. Veles and two of his men were with him.

“Go ahead,” Richards said into his comms.

Veles nodded, hit something on his wrist piece, and said, “Again, tell us why you’re here.”

The vampire stared blankly at him for a moment, the red nearly gone from his eyes, and said, “I… honestly don’t remember. There was a name—Shrina Collins.” Shrina felt her heart racing at that, but it only confirmed her suspicions at the building where she’d rescued Prestige. She kept listening. “I see images, like… I don’t know.”

“Try,” Veles said, leaning forward. “Please try.”

A look of pain went through the vampire, and he said, “There was a jet… we were overseas… and caves… darkness, and… and…”

“Spit it out.”

“A dragon.”

Veles laughed, looked through the mirror in Shrina’s direction with a look of confusion, then said, “A dragon?”

“Not a real one. But in those caves, it felt like it could be at times. No, a carving or a statue… with eyes like emeralds.”

The others were starting to look doubtful, but Shrina stepped back, hand to her chest. If her heart kept beating like that, she was certain she’d pass out. Images of patterns and horse paintings and the dragon flashed through her mind from the moment before they’d pulled her out of her enhancements.

Her head started to spin and she stumbled out of there, looking for water and maybe somewhere to sit until the dizziness passed.

“Are you all right, Agent Collins?” Richards asked, but his voice faded out behind her as she entered the hallway and the door shut.

How was it possible this man—no, this vampire—was describing what she’d seen in that nightmare? Was it possible it was a coincidence? That didn’t seem likely. And what was worse about the whole situation was that it seemed to tie together what they’d done to her and what these things were. Those so-called vampires might be failed experiments, something the government had tried and ended up making a huge mistake.

The bigger implication for her was that maybe they had messed up on her, too, and soon she would become one of these vampires. She
